Former Arsenal flop Mathieu Debuchy beats PSG superstar Neymar to Ligue 1 Player of the Month award
- Mathieu Debuchy has been crowned Ligue 1 Player of the Month for February
- The former Arsenal man has been in impressive form for his club Saint Etienne
- Debuchy beat Neymar to the honour despite his 27 goals this season
- The Frenchman becomes the first defender to win the award for five years
The 32-year-old has been in impressive form for his new club Saint Etienne and was duly awarded with France‘s top award for the month – brushing aside fellow candidate Neymar despite his 19 goals in 20 games this season, including two last month.
After his Arsenal career wound down to a miserable end, Debuchy made the switch back to France following the cancellation of his contract by the north London club in January.
Debuchy becomes the first defender to win the award for the last five years, and is eyeing up a shock call to the France World Cup side as a result.
It’s a whirlwind start to the 32-year-old’s return to his native country, after playing only six games to date, and remaining undefeated with his side throughout.
Of those six games Debuchy has found the back of the net twice, showing his versatility for the team across the pitch.
Neymar was heavily tipped for the award, which would have been his last domestic accolade of the season after being ruled out for the remainder of the campaign.

A foot injury picked up in a recent victory over PSG’s rivals Marseille required surgery, leaving the 26-year-old facing a race to be fit in time to lead Brazil at the Russia World Cup in summer.
A cloud still looms over the future of Neymar in French football also, with recent reports in Spain suggesting the player is open to a move to Real Madrid.
PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has flown to Brazil to speak with his star man, in hope of putting to an end any disquiet surrounding his future in Paris.
